Teens Geocaching with Instagram Contest
Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity in which participants use a mobile device and other navigational techniques to either hide and/or find (and then leave behind) containers called geocaches. Geocaches are hidden at specific locations which are marked by coordinates.
Teens who'd like to get a feel for geocaching are encouraged to attend the library's in-person Teens Go Geocaching Kickoff event at Miller Park on Wednesday, June 1, from 2-4pm. Teens can register for that in-person event at bit.ly/bplgeokickoff
Teens who take part in our 8-week geocache hunt can also take part in the library's Geocaching Instagram Scavenger Hunt which comes with a chance to win an Amazon gift card. To participate in the Instagram contest:
- Follow the teenZone Instagram account* to receive a weekly cache clue that leads to a hidden cache.
- Locate the geocache and snap a picture of yourself with the item or a clue in the area to help others locate the cache.
- Post the photo to Instagram and tag the library's teenZone Instagram account. (DO NOT post photos that show the exact location of the cache. It needs to remain a mystery for other hunters.
- DO leave the cache behind so other treasure hunters can find it.
Participants will earn 1 entry into our prize drawing for each geocache they find, post, and tag.
Geocache clues will be available from June 5 to July 24. To receive entries in the drawing, posts/tags must be logged by Friday, July 29. The winner of the drawing will be announced on Saturday, July 30. Participants must be in grades 6-12.
Participants will need to create a Geocaching account and download the free Geocaching app to their mobile device. Participants are encouraged to watch the following video before going geocaching. bit.ly/geoetiquette1
