Program Description

Nearly 39 years after the nuclear accident, Stephen Quandt reflects on his recent trip to Chernobyl, now part of Ukraine, to participate in a spay/neuter and research campaign for the dogs descended from the pets left behind after the disaster.

With videos and photographs, Quandt will tell the story of meeting the human and animal residents of the mostly abandoned City of Chernobyl, the abandoned City of Pripyat, and the town of Slavutych, which was built to evacuate residents from Chernobyl and Pripyat. You'll learn how radiation has changed the environment and impacted the lives of both humans and dogs who have remained in the area.

It's a surprisingly uplifting story of resilience, hope, life, and even heroism.

Quandt is a Feline Behaviorist with the nonprofit Animal Care Centers of NYC; prior to that he was with the ASPCA. He has worked around the country on pet adoption, disaster, and cruelty cases. Quandt also has a private practice for clients with cat behavior issues. He lives in the New York City area with his husband and two cats - Cricket and Jenny.
